Well, hardly but I got a request last week. A young gal probably 20? She asked if I could give her a referral and I didn’t see that part of the email and told her to bring me the quilt and I’d take a look and recommend from there. She brought it quickly and I kept it to get some advice from my quilty friends and was assured I could do this. So…I took the job. And so far this is the process. All of the background fabric (probably muslin) was threadbare. This was a hand stitched crazy quilt grandma made and gave all the grandkids 20 years ago. This particular quilt is well loved.
When she handed it to me and I held it in my arms I almost cried for all the love I could feel in this quilt, both from grandma and from her. We took it downstairs to the design wall to hang it up so I could get some pictures. I told her not to feel bad about the wear in the quilt. That was supposed to happen to a well-loved quilt and that Grandma would be so happy she made something worthy of loving as much as it was. Now the question was can I help it?
I decided to take on the task, not having any real clue what to charge or how long it would take. This quilt has 20 blocks and sashing. From July 4-July 8 I have 44 hours into it and I’m half way done with stage one. Replacing the background fabric. This is not be a money maker but more of a ministry to a young gal hanging on to her grandma’s love.
Will I do it again? Probably <3
