Doreen's Story

Back in 2008 my mom taught me to quilt. I suffer with pain in my body that never ends. Instead of giving up and getting addicted to pain meds and going the route of surgery, I decided to find something to give me purpose...quilting was it! When my mom came to visit, we had so much fun shopping and sharing fabric. After the initial old-fashioned learning to quilt, I went to YouTube and learned updated practices. No longer would we need to cut out cardboard for a square or use scissors to cut the fabric into squares or triangles. And no longer would we need to baste our quilts with straight pins! Oh no! I have had a rotary cutter and mat and for years but never knew what to do with it. In comes YouTube to save the day and sanity! I was able to teach my mom the new practices and together we started a ministry called: The Lord's Quilters. This ministry turned into a non-profit and included quilters from across the nation and even Canada! We made quilts for people who were sick either in body or mind, prayed over them and gave them away. Eventually, Facebook came about, and we started a group. We made and sent out over 500 quilts in our course of ministry.
In 2021 my husband died unexpectantly of a brain aneurism. I managed to stay in my home and eventually came out of the basement to make my home a "quilty" house. I met a group of local quilters and one lady in particular that came alongside of me and we became best friends. About a year later another gal came into the "bff" circle and we sew as much as we can together.
I learned way back how to quilt the quilts with what's called Free Motion Quilting. It's all hand guided no computer used, and I was truly passionate about it. My new friends encouraged my (and my old online quilting buddies) to use my gifts and make some money. Especially since I lost my husband's income and needed to supplement somehow. I quilted for the besties and some of the other folks in the group and eventually gained enough confidence to go to the public. Doreen’s Quilting Creations was created and as you can see through this website, I have done a lot of work over the last few years. I am a Christian and honor God by using the gift He gave my many years ago. He had a plan and I had to catch up to it.
Today, I am doing well and always looking for another quilt I can quilt to make someone happy. I do custom work. Even if I do an all over design it is still custom because I don't use a computer or put the quilt on a frame. I have an 18 inch longarm. HandiQuilter Capri.
Note: The picture above is of my mom (passed in 2020) and I wrapping a quilt around Alice, a lady that requested help as she was in hospice and wanted he quilt finished before she died. We were so grateful to be able to help. I will write a blog and tell Alice's story.
